Purpose of study
Postgraduate studies in psychodietetics are a response to the growing demand for support in the form of education and counselling regarding the emotional factors underlying eating behaviour. Overweight and obesity are problems increasingly affecting modern, highly developed societies. In Europe, over 50 per cent of adults are already overweight or obese. In past eras, food shortages were commonplace, and periods of famine were not uncommon. Today, food is ubiquitous; unhealthy snacks, in particular, are available at the touch of a button. Stress, a lack of physical activity, sensory overload and advertising mean that modern people consume far too many calories. Scientists warn that in countries with a high proportion of overweight and obese people, the risk of death from any cause is more than 20 per cent higher than in other regions. Another increasingly common problem is psychogenic eating disorders. The suffering of those affected by bulimia or anorexia is an issue to which, as a society, we cannot remain indifferent.
On the other hand, there is growing interest in a healthy lifestyle and a healthy diet. Whilst this trend is welcome, it should be noted that there are many misconceptions and misrepresentations surrounding healthy eating. In this area too, there is a need for suitably qualified and trained specialists who can provide education and guidance on optimising diet and lifestyle, taking psychological factors into account.
During the course, students will acquire the skills to work with people experiencing various types of problems relating to nutrition and physical activity, and will also have the opportunity to learn the basics of medical law and issues in the field of public health. Furthermore, they will develop the skills to communicate correctly and effectively with patients and to provide them with the necessary assistance using a variety of techniques.
Graduates will acquire knowledge and skills in areas such as:
- The legal framework governing the profession of dietitian
- Code of Ethics for the Dietetic Profession
- Public health objectives relating to the promotion of a healthy lifestyle
- Diet-related diseases and eating disorders
- The psychological aspects of nutrition
- The Fundamentals of the Physiology of Nutrition and Physical Activity
