Purpose of study

Neurological speech and language therapy is a branch of speech and language therapy that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of the neurological causes of speech disorders and communication difficulties of neurological origin. There is a growing demand for specialists with expertise in this developing field. This demand is particularly evident in a variety of medical and educational institutions, social care centres, and non-governmental organisations.

Neuro-speech therapy is an interesting career path for qualified speech and language therapists. Specialisation in this field involves deepening one’s knowledge and skills in the diagnosis and delivery of neuro-speech therapy, as well as the analysis of specialist tests and collaboration with professionals from other fields of medicine, psychology and so on. Graduates also gain knowledge of neurological and mental health conditions whose symptoms include speech and language disorders. The programme also includes a workshop on alternative and augmentative communication (AAC), enabling students to acquire extremely useful skills.

The degree programme prepares speech and language therapists to work with children and adults with neurologically-based speech disorders.

Graduates of postgraduate programmes are authorised to work in closed healthcare facilities (e.g. rehabilitation, neurology and psychiatry wards), in specialist facilities (e.g. those caring for people with intellectual disabilities or cerebral palsy), as well as to use the professional title ‘neuro-speech therapist’ in private practice.

Completing a postgraduate course in neuro-speech therapy does not equate to obtaining the title of ‘specialist in neuro-speech therapy’ within the healthcare system.
