Purpose of study

The planned changes to the ethics teaching system in primary and secondary schools, involving the introduction of a requirement to choose at least one of two subjects – namely, ethics or religious education – will mean that ethics teachers will be in high demand on the labour market in the near future. In response to this social need, we offer a postgraduate course in Ethics for Teachers.

Graduates of the postgraduate programme ‘Ethics for Teachers’ will be qualified to teach ethics in primary and secondary schools. The curriculum for this postgraduate qualification programme, delivered in accordance with teacher training standards, has been designed to ensure that graduates receive a thorough subject-specific grounding for teaching this subject. It covers detailed teaching methodology in the field of ethics, as well as practical preparation for delivering lessons in primary and secondary schools.

Graduates of the postgraduate programme will learn how to identify, analyse and describe normative and practical issues relating to the field of morality; they will gain knowledge of historical and contemporary ethical systems; they will hone their skills in leading and moderating discussions, formulating and evaluating arguments; and they will learn how to apply the principle of charitable interpretation (principle of charity) in the spirit of Jan Łukasiewicz’s maxim that ‘logic is the ethics of thought and speech’. The programme also aims to prepare graduates to oversee relationships between pupils and to prevent and respond to any manifestations of disrespect, lack of kindness, discrimination and exclusion.

An important aspect of the programme is to prepare graduates to independently improve and develop their skills and broaden their knowledge in the field of ethics education.
